Picking an outfit for a concert isn’t the easiest task. You want to look good but not like you’re trying too hard. Plus you need to be comfortable enough to dance and not get overheated (an especially challenging task in the winter). And if you’re accompanying someone to a gig that’s not your usual scene? Perfect recipe for a bed full of rejected outfits. Check out our suggestions below to make getting ready for a concert easier.

It’s easiest to decide what to wear if you break it down by genre. Every musical genre will have its own specific vibe and aesthetic, so as long as you follow it you should be fine.

Pop

You can be a little more cutesy at a pop concert, but leave the crazy outfits for the performer. Make a going out top your main focus. It could have an interesting texture like silk or sequins, or maybe it’s just has a cute detail like a bardot neckline. Pair it with a simple bottoms. It could be jeans if it’s colder out, but try a looser fit like boyfriend or mom for comfort. Go for a simple skirt if it’s warm out. As for footwear, choose something comfortable like sneakers or flat ankle boots.

Indie/Rock

Rockers tend to be more casual. You will probably find most of the crowd in a t-shirt and jeans, with a few layered shirts thrown in the mix. You can dress up the look a bit by adding some jewelry, or slightly altering the look by wearing a t-shirt dress with a shirt tied around your waist. Alternately, a t-shirt and denim skirt is a good bet. Go for classic rocker kicks like converse or combat boots.

Hip Hop/Rap

Rap and hip hop is famous for its sporty/street aesthetic. Think upscale athleisure. Maybe a simple crop top with fashion joggers (in a nicer fabric like crepe or satin), or an oversized hoodie dress. Feel free to flash some logos here. Sneakers will be your best bet when it comes to footwear.

EDM

You can go all out at an EDM show. The electronic music scene is infamous for outrageous raver clothing. Neon and holographic colors, psychedelic prints, scandalous shapes … you name it! If you feel like showing a bit of skin you can literally wear a bra and hotpants. For a little more modesty layer up with mesh tops, or choose a minidress over oversized tee instead.

Have fun with what you’re wearing, but remember that enjoying the music is the most important thing!
