Christmas is all around us. The decorations, the trees, the presents, the carols, Santa... and the movies. This time of the year is the best opportunity to stay warm and comfortable at home and enojy the company of your loved ones with a good movie. Christmas is also the time when many new movies appear. But it is very hard to bit the classics, even though every once and a while there are exceptions. So in the effort of trying to match everyones cinematic taste, here is a list of the best Christmas movies for this magical season.
It's a Wonderful Life
Christmas is when magic happens, like it happened for George Bailey in this wonderful classic. Bailey is trying very hard to keep a small bank afloat, but towards the end of the year a significant amount of money disappears. The pressure and stress take a load on him that is too hard for him to handle, and he decides to commit suicide. Thankfully, the Christmas spirit arrives and helps miracles happen.
Just on the day when his parents leave him alone at home, mistakenly of course, two robbers try to get into the neighbor's house. Thankfully, Kevin was there. Though he is only 8 years old, he is very resourcefull and brave for his age. The actor, Macauly Culkin, in one of his best and most memorable performances will surly rob your heart.
Will Ferrell's best character hands down. This movie is just pure happiness. Buddy the elf, who looks considerably different than all the other elves in the North Pole, traveles to New York to look for his father. The culture shock he experiences is a definite source for many of the hilarious moments this movie offers.
Though this movie has many version, most recently in an animated form, Jim Carrey's version from the 2000s is one of the best. The giant hairy green man, who hates Christmas, will take you through all the emotions and will make you fall in love with him. Filled with magic.
Have you ever considered home swapping? Because this movie makes it look like lots of fun. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) are both tired of suffering because of men and decide to take a vacation from their routines. In a web page that offers house swapping, Amanda finds Iris's offer, and the two of them move into eachother's houses for the Christmas time. Each one gets back in touch with herself, and it helps when new loves enter their lives. The soundtrack is also very good and adds a lot.
The great british romatic comedy, which has one of the most incredible casts ever. While the new prime minister of Britain (Hugh Grant) falls in love, a writer (Colin Firth) finds the magic in the Portuguese language. Emma Thompson is having some marital problems with Alan Rickman and Keira Knightley finds an unexpected love. If this is not enough of a name dropping for you, you will also find Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, and Bill Nighy among many other wonderful actors that make this movie a yearly must watch.
The Polar Express
The animated movie that looks so real you will forget it is animated. It tells the story of an 8 years old boy that starts to lose his belief in Santa Claus and the magic of Christmas. In a last attempt to get him to believe, he aboards the magical Polar Express train, with the ticket master Tom Hanks, that takes him on an adventure he will never forget. The movie is filled with festive music and breathtaking animation.
Christmas with the Kranks
One of my family's personal favorites. Luther and Nora Krank decide that this year, since their daughter is in Peru, they will skip Christmas and will go on a Caribbean Cruise instead. Their neighbors are very upset and try to do whatever they can to make them (or force them) change their mind. The Kranks do their best to keep their plan going, but a surprising turn of events causes them to want Christmas back. A story about the true meaning of family, community, and friendship.
