These Are Rick & Morty Best Moments And Characters From Last Seasons

Adult Swim shows often bring us, children at heart, the best of both worlds: cartoon characters that are unbound to laws of physics and nature and unapologetic storylines that contain foul language, parodies, and body parts aplenty.

In this case, there are a few bonuses that make the show much funnier, more realistic and human at the same time: a buddy comedy, hysteria, old Vs.young, puberty versus crazy scientist, and even some family drama.

Over it’s run during 3 seasons – currently on it’s fourth, it’s not easy to summarize an array of characters that display such a spectrum: from human(ish) to the utterly bizarre.

On top of all that, there are heartwarming moments that make us feel our humanity – even if the line is delivered by an alien that has conquered earth. Please enjoy our collection, and let us know in the comments which other moments/characters you would have added to this list.

1. Alternate Universe Sequence (Season 1, Episode 10)

Rick and Morty are being hunted down by the Council of Ricks (all the Ricks from all the other dimensions, of course), and we are fortunate enough to see the dimensions they go through during their daring escape.

ZUmNFom

Among those dimensions, are greasy grandma world, pizzas who order human takeout (black, with half Hispanic), phones that use humans as phones and order couches for takeout (recliner, and wheelchair on half).

My personal favorite: couches ordering phones using pizzas (Rotary, and payphone on half), and using humans as couches. The entire escape is part of a fun, compelling episode, but we chose to start with a fun, light little scene that embodies that though weird and cartoonish, there is also truth and import to telling stories in this fashion, especially in an episode surrounding freedom and power.

2. & 3. Mr. Poopybutthole and Total Rickall (Season 2, Episode 4)

Guys, do NOT underestimate Mr. Poopybutthole, or the number of times I can write Mr. Poopybutthole in the paragraph, about Mr. Poopybutthole, before I am relieved of my duties (see what I did there?).

poopybuthole-beth

In one of the shows best episodes, and probably the most time consuming for the animators, we begin by an unceremonious killing of “Uncle Steve”, who is, in fact, a parasite that has infected the family by embedding memories in them.

uncle-steave

After Rick shoots it, and just as nonchalantly, Mr. Poopybutthole appears, and the opening credits roll. Soon after, “Cousin Nikki” arrives, who is, of course, another parasite.

The episode continues with multiple characters being shot into purple goo, yet Mr. Poopybutthole is shown to be truly reliable, real constant in the Smith’s lives – “Ooh – wee!”.

In a true powerhouse, complex episode, we encounter endless characters and what real and what isn’t become foggy even to Rick. It’s enthralling to witness more and more insane combos like a talking fridge who is also a housewife character from the 50’s, just one tiny example.

To discover more about the beloved character Mr. Poopybutthole, check out the video on Adult Swim called “The Poop in My Pants”, which shows Mr. Poopybutthole as a child, father a Jew and a part of the Smith family.

4. Mr. Meseeks (Season 1, Episode 5)

Morty is sick and tired of being the sidekick, which is understandable. Surprisingly, Rick agrees and dares the boy to create a worthy adventure. But before all that – we are introduced to Mr. Meseeks, who fulfills any wish your heart desires – and disappears in a poof when the wish has been completed.

mr-meesek

This humane, beautiful character not only makes things happen, he sits with Beth and listens to her pain. However, things get complicated when one of the Meseeks can’t seem to get Jerry to get two strokes off his golf game.

meeseeks1

After giving up, tens of Meseeks who called each other to get help can’t die, as their task has not been completed. There’s beautiful tragedy in these blue fellas, who start killing each other and yet creating more at the same time, desperate for a resolution.

meeseek2

After a grisly scene, they get a brilliant idea – if they kill Jerry – there will be no strokes at all! But they miscalculated Jerry’s greatest asset of all – his wife Beth, who in 5 seconds flat fixes his game so perfectly, all the Meseeks poof out of existence… and the happy couple go home, which has been completely devasted by the Meseeks.

5. & 6. Pickle Rick & Dr. Wong (Season 3, Episode 3)

Not one to be bogged down by general “sitcom” or “comedy” archetypes, this episode goes full-on Terminator AND The Sopranos, complete with excellent one-liners, which is very Willis/Gibson/Schwarzenegger, in the best way.

pickle-rick1

It also delivers perhaps the most thought-provoking, deep-dish psychobabble, which is not babble at all, and in fact is eerily accurate. Not only that, it introduces us to two fantastic characters – Pickle Rick and Dr. Wong (Susan Sarandon).

dr-wong

Things appear pretty innocuous at first, as Rick turns himself into a pickle to get out of family therapy. Making his way to a sewer full of rats and bugs, and thus creates himself a “body” with rat parts.

pickle-rat

Horrific sewer violence happens when said Terminator-style carnage claims the sewers by Pickle Rick. On the other side of town, Dr. Wong is trying to show Beth how her kids and marriage are affected by her and Rick’s dynamics.

pickle-3

When Pickle Rick finally reaches the therapist’s office, battered and bruised, Dr. Wong gets him to admit that everyone in the family uses intelligence to avoid sickness in all its forms, which is a bonkers accurate and terrifying analysis after a very short session. We understand Rick more as a pickle than a man, and we understand the family more with a complete stranger. That’s Rick & Morty for ya.

7. Evil Morty (Season 1, Episode 10)

27 Ricks have been brutally murdered in their respective timelines, and our Rick is accused of the crime. In a planet full of Ricks that is able to scan his portal gun (embarrassing, portal history), he and Morty make a run for it, and Morty discovers an inconvenient truth – he’s Rick’s partner because his “stupid” brain waves cancel out Rick’s “Genius” waves so he can’t be detected.

evil-morty

Morty is devastated. A different Rick and a Morty (the evil one) captures our heroes. Morty finds himself in a giant room full of captive Mortys, who declare him their savior. Rick is exonerated as the killer, but as the duo walks away, the council of Ricks discovers something sinister.

evil-morty2

The killer Rick was, in fact, remote-controlled like a puppet… by Evil Morty, who we get a glimpse of together with all the other Mortys that have been rescued. Though Evil Morty appears again in Season 3 and becomes a dictator, the real story behind this mysterious character has yet to be revealed (fan theories abound on this topic).

8. & 9. Mortynight Run & Fart (Season 2, Episode 2)

As previously stated, there is much more to the show than aliens and burps. In this episode, Morty is put into a game by Rick, a game called “Roy: A Life Well Lived”. This is actually a simulation of an entire life, Roy’s life. Childhood, college, marriage, beating cancer, and death too. Game over.

roy

When he wakes up, it’s been only a moment, yet Morty experiences a lifetime. A few scenes later, Morty releases a creature called “Fart”, who sings and shows amazing visions to Morty full of butts and psychedelic wonders.

fart1

The song “Moonmen” became an instant classic, sounding like a Bowie song. Which makes sense, since the artist was offered the chance to perform it and refused. Apparently, the song is so powerful it helps the duo and Fart escape by causing police officers to commit suicide.

fart2

Not only that, Fart says what we’re all thinking at times: carbon-based life (humans) is a disease and must be exterminated. And so, against Morty’s conscience and inner being, he kills the Fart. It’s a truly sad moment, showing humanity, that goes against universal logic, championing survival above anything else.

10. & 11. Unity & Auto Erotic Assimilation (Season 2, Episode 3)

True love is hard to come by, even for fictional cartoon characters. In this episode, Rick is reunited (no pun intended) with his Ex-lover – Unity, who is a part of a collective who think and feel together.

unity1

There’s a beautiful sequence of how Rick speaks to Unity, through every single person he encounters, making sex, color, and every other individual distinction irrelevant. Rick takes advantage in a hilarious fashion, making love to “Unity” in front of thousands of redheads in a football field, and hobbles out, exhausted.

unity2

A different species, who is clearly in love with Unity called Beta-7 (a clear tribute to “The Borg” from STTNG) flies away in sadness when Unity decides to keep partying with Rick, instead.

beta7

There’s a fascinating moral quandary to this episode – as, despite the fact that all individuality is lost due to Unity taking over the plant, all the “bad” is gone too – sex offenders are contributing members of society, a drug-addicted becomes a marine biologist, and there is a sense of complete harmony.

unity4

After showing Unity some more good times, it seems Rick has diminished her control, and people regain their previous identities – and horror and race wars ensue. Summer and Morty try and pry Rick away from Unity, but return home empty-handed.

unity3

Unity, however, comes to her senses and realizes that the reason she loses herself in Rick is that she/he/it is incomplete. It’s a beautiful message about freedom, love, loss and finding yourself, with or without someone else.

12. Morty's Mind Blowers (Season 3, Episode 8)

Morty discovers that Rick has been removing his memories – to Morty’s request – since the beginning. Rick has an entire lab filled with those memories. As a result, we get a montage of all the worst things the duo has done, Morty as well – and the entire family.

mind-blowing1

Beth decides to save Summer’s life instead of Morty’s, a demon slug emerges from Morty’s body, the tragic death of bee-bo, and even Rick making an ass out of himself. After a short brawl between the two in the lab, they completely lose their memories.

mind-blowing2

More snippets arise, like a hilarious one about achieving “true level” which makes Morty go insane and lose grip on reality, Morty reads animal minds (squirrels are attempting to destroy humanity), and more.

squirrel

In a panic and rage, Morty accesses every memory he can find and tries to kill himself. Before he can, Summer crashes the party and follows protocol “scenario 4” to save the day.

mindblow3

The two have no idea of what happened, they lose all past memories and remain as they were before, just Rick and Morty. The beauty of the episode’s sentiment is reminiscent of “Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind”, asking the time old question - if erasing memories, which we all do subconsciously to some degree – can change us. If we did have access to our entire history and memories – would we want to kill ourselves too?

mind-blowing3

13. & 14. The Wedding Squanchers & The Rickshank Redemption (Season 2, Episode 10; Season 3, Episode 1)

Unfortunately, Rick and Morty have to go to a wedding, which is a huge bummer for them, yet exciting for Summer and Beth. After a beautiful ceremony between a girl and a bird person, the reception includes Rick attempting to give a best man speech, which does not go well, as he talks smack about marriage, but ends on a positive note by him promising to try and open himself up more.

wedding

Bad call. Tammy the bride shocks the entire party and confesses to being an undercover agent, and a huge shooting match aided by the mild-mannered cat that welcomed them turns into a giant cat-beast and pleads with Rick to get them all out of there, which he does. While flying home, the family discovers they can’t return, as Rick is a wanted man.

tammy

And so, the gang goes shopping for a new planet to live on. The first one is a tad bit small, the second one is a planet on a cobb, so that’s no good. The third planet has a sun that literally screams in terror for 42 hours a day.

sun

Back to square one, or actually – the first planet, which is about the size of a NY student apartment. A pretty short scene shows Rick walking for about 10 seconds throughout the entire planet, and to its’ north pole.

tiny-planet

Jerry argues that they should go home and betray Rick, but the other four insist on staying, with Beth claiming, painfully, that she doesn’t want him to leave again. But she is about to be heartbroken, as Rick heroically leaves the family and gives himself up, and the family gets picked up and moved back to planet earth, now occupied by the Galactic Federation.

In the end scene, Rick is shown in a maximum-security prison. “What are you in for?” asks an inmate close by. “Everything.” Replied Rick. Quite the little cliffhanger…Episode 1 of Season 3 starts with a simulation, with Rick being the smartest man in the universe and making his captors pretty frustrated trying to prod his mind.

rick-simulation

Back to the family, everyone is tense except Jerry, who is living on many, many pills and doing just fine. As Rick is taken back to the day he invented the portal gun and orders Szechuan sauce that is no longer made, we realize he was once a very different guy, in love with his wife Diane.

s3e1

However, we also discover Rick has the power to take control of the mind machine, and we witness Rick move from body to body as he escapes captivity. Summer and Morty are brought in front of the Ricks, as Morty gives an impassioned speech about the destructive powers of their grandfather.

A huge galactic battle ensues, and the other Ricks threatens Summer, but Morty saves them so that Rick can completely bring down the Galactic Federation… by changing a 1 into a 0.

battle

The Galactic guys finally leave, and Rick, Summer & Morty return home. Beth encourages Jerry to leave and informs the rest of the family that they will be getting a divorce.

The episode ends with Rick declaring his love of the Szechuan sauce as the only reason for his “heroic” acts, while a terrified Morty lies on the ground. Well, I guess a kind of dipping sauce is a good enough reason as any to kill and go berserk. Right?

15. & 16. Goo Toxin Rick and Morty & Rest and Ricklaxation (Season 3, Episode 6)

Poor Morty, all he wants is to date a nice girl like Jessica. In a series first, after six days of a mission that almost kills them, Rick exclaims “we need a vacation”.

looking-at-jessica

Damn right. Rick takes Morty to a day spa somewhere in the galaxy, and a machine transports them to a world of goo, and goo monsters. In fact, there was no mistake, as Rick and Morty were split in two, a couple that’s relaxed and happy, and the second couple in the goo world – which is actually excess toxins that were removed from the original duo.

spa

In the goo world, Rick is bonkers and evil, while Morty is a terrified meek boy. But in the real world, Morty gains a sense of confidence, while Rick is sweet and kind. Seems ideal.

Unfortunately, Rick discovers the split, and Morty breaks his tech and convinces him to just… let it go. On a date with Jessica, Morty starts to lose it a bit, can’t stop talking, and goes berserk.

morty-talking

Turns out Morty without the toxins is a bad comedian on some kind of upper drug. He seduces a beautiful woman and brings her home, and refuses Rick’s attempt to detoxify. What happens is not a merger of the four, but a standoff between the good and bad Ricks, which is totally epic.

standoff

By the end of it, the goo Rick and Morty are preparing to toxify the entire world, and another grand scene depicts what everything would look like in its “bad” form, like religion, birthdays, and children murdering adults.

The good Rick convinces bad Rick to merge together, the world returns to normal, with one little problem – Morty flies off, unwilling to go back to how he used to be, in a delightful “Wolf of Wallstreet” scene.

wolf-of

But he is discovered by Rick and Jessica and returned to his real merged form. It’s pretty sad actually, much like the “memories” episode, where the two are given the opportunity to be the best version of themselves, and Rick gives up his mental health and happiness to return Morty to his childhood.

17. & 18. Shrimply Pibbles & Penis Humor (Season 2, Episode 8)

Dick jokes are funny. Small jokes, big jokes, and turning penises into hearts for civil rights champion, Shrimply Pibbles. There’s a great little speech given at the hospital to Jerry about how the entire human race is obsessed with penises, and it’s really funny, as the speech is 100% accurate.

Shrimply-Pibbles1

With Beth being promised an impressive bionic replacement that will no doubt satisfy her more than the current penis, she doesn’t seem to be as opposed to the removal as one would think… However – adamant on keeping his manhood – Jerry decides to make it clear to everyone that perhaps S.P. isn’t as great as everyone thinks.

sp

This doesn’t go well, and the hails become jeers as he’s labeled a terrible person. And so, a synthetic heart is found to replace Jerry’s penis. Jerry doesn’t take kindly to being outshined by the universe, changes his mind and bursts in the operating room with a gun, demanding they cut off his penis.

heart-peebles

Seen as a threat, Jerry’s shot what seems like thousands of times (actually, 57), and wakes up perfectly fine, as being in an alien hospital means gunshots are nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

In this episode, there’s a fun B story about the rest of the family in the waiting room showing different TV shows and how bonkers they are, and… how similar they are too insane human TV.

tv-1

It’s pretty cool to see exaggerated, violent shows that represent our TV heroes as alien beings. The stories work really well together, as the absurdity of fragile masculinity, wanting to be liked and TV taking over humanity’s way of analyzing itself is as universal as TV and reproduction itself.

man-vs-car

19. & 20. Butter Robot & The Devil (Season 1, Episode 9)

The only character without much… character, yet just as profound as any of Rick & Morty’s complex individuals. At first, Rick is eating pancakes and the small robot asks him “What is my purpose?”.

butter-robot

As Rick explains it’s passing butter, exclusively, the poor little guy bows his head in despair, and Rick replies: “Yeah, welcome to the club pal.”

real

It’s a short sequence and seems innocuous, but nothing really is in this universe is it? Just as the cute little robot only passes butter and that is his entire purpose, so must us working bees complete our purpose, pay rent, raise a family, do our homework, and then hopefully reach the end of our lives with either a feeling of a purpose complete, or most likely - a sense of missed opportunity or potential. The entirety in life in one 30 seconds scene.

butter-pourpos

One the other side of town, Summer’s gotten her first high-school paying job, working at an antique store. Her boss looks like he’s come from the 1800’s, and has an accent while floating around menacing, eerie phrases and “muahahaha” laughing like a classic bad guy.

devil1

We find out pretty quickly that he’s up to no good, and as soon as Rick enters his shop, he asks him if he’s the devil. That’s pretty spot-on, as that’s exactly who he is. Summers reply? Oh well, every teenage job involves working for a company that uses sweatshops or gives people diarrhea.

devil2

But Rick decides to take this opportunity and films an ad, promising to “de-curse” any object bought from The Devil’s shop. Which he does with science, of course. For example, a man bought running shoes that made him the fastest man alive – but made him run until he almost died – Rick fixed that.

fastest-man

So, you get the magical device without the curse, it’s a win-win. What does The Devil do? Tries to hang himself, and Summer saves him and helps him create a website that gets bought by Google.

devilgif

Then he Zuckerberg’s her, and cries “I’m the Devil, biatch!”. But it doesn’t stop there – Rick and Summer train like crazy and become huge and terrifying, and they kick the Devil’s ass in the ring and get their well-earned revenge.

21. & 22. Snuffles / Snowball & Scary Terry (Season 1, Episode 2)

I think all of us at some point – even non-pet owners, have wished they could communicate with animals, or make their pets smarter (my cats do things that I can’t even comprehend). Rick puts a fancy helmet on Snuffles and he immediately becomes smarter.

snuffels1

But as Pet Cemetery has taught us all, messing with nature can really mess things up in the human world. Snuffles powers up and becomes sentient and talks to the family using technology he himself created.

The dog becomes some kind of Bionic entity, and menaces the family, creating a race of similar dogs, while changing his name to Snowball. The huge dog army start taking over the world and treating humans as dogs, degrading them.

snuffels3

Naturally, we discover Rick has actually incepted Snowball’s dreams and the whole thing was an elaborate ruse. Snowball realizes that trying to take over the world will lead to nothing but pain, and he and the other dogs go to another planet to populate it.

While all this is going down, Rick and Morty are on their own adventure. Rick decides to incept the dreams of Morty’s teacher, to raise Morty’s math scores. Little do they know that in his dreams, the teacher has an alter ego that is like an action hero who loves using machine guns.

To save themselves, they go into another woman’s dream (Mrs. Pancakes), and when that goes south, they go into a centaur’s dream instead. There, they meet Scary Terry, who uses the word “Bitch” to the point of it losing all meaning.

trry6

We see a bunch of horror tropes like a creepy little girl, and a red terrifying dream world. The two manage to hide (despite Terry telling them that they can’t hide), and they follow Terry to discover he has a loving wife and a kid.

When he falls asleep, they incept him, and find out his worst nightmare is being bullied in school as a kid. Rick and Morty comfort him and make him feel better, and as he wakes up, he shows us his true self, a heart of gold, and moves them from one incepted dream to another until they finally manage to leave the teacher’s dream and return to the real world. Scary Terry saves the day.

23. & 24. & 25. Abradolf Lincler & Bird Person & Squanchy the cat & Lucy (Season 1, Episode 11)

Parents are gone? Have a party. As part of the many colorful characters attending the ill-advised event, Abradolf Lincler (literally) crashes the party, looking mighty upset.

liclair

You see, some time ago Rick attempted to create the perfect leader by combing parts of Adolf Hitler and Abraham Lincoln, as one does. Apparently, the creature is pretty decent and helps the gang get some crystals, but is tragically killed – for crystals that are apparently amazing, psychedelic drugs.

liclair2

Bird Person is an interesting character based on Native Americans, combined with a bird, literally. It’s great to see his unfazed, uniform way of speaking and non-facial expressions to negate all the other bonkers characters.

bird-person1

Squanchy the cat comes in (no pun intended) and asks where one can squanch. Morty discovers him a while later performing erotic exfoliation in a closet, which is rather rattling, as the cat is really, really into it.

On the aforementioned parent’s vacation (a Titanic recreation cruise), Beth and Jerry come in contact with a worker/cleaner called Lucy, who has always loved Titanic but never participated in the cruise events.

Beth, who does NOT want to be there, gives up her spot and Lucy and Jerry walk around and enjoy the sights. However, Lucy develops a deadly crush on Jerry, gets naked, and tells him to do her in the car, so they can fog it up.

Though she threatens him with a gun, Beth comes to the rescue and throws her kindle on her. The two go home. As they reach the totally demolished house, after the party, instead of going insane, Rick simply freezes time, and we are privileged to witness a short montage of Summer, Morty, and Rick cleaning, having fun, and leaving their parents frozen all the way up to season 2.

26. Rick Potion N.9 (Season 1, Episode 6)

What would you do for love? Would destroying the world be cool? Morty wants Jessica, badly. He asks Rick to make a potion so that Jessica falls for him. Rick goes to Prom, stands in front of Jessica, and she falls deep, deep in love.

Problem is – the potion causes an endless chain of people who fall madly in love with him as well. Everyone at the Prom, including the band, are completely infatuated and obsessed, and Rick rushes in to try and salvage the situation.

But the serum Rick creates to counter the effects turn everyone into weird bug people, and things get drastically worse. The bugs and the rest of humanity still love Morty and cause havoc and terror all over the world.

Rick attempts again with another serum, but this time people turn into atrocious worm-like creatures. Understanding there is no way back, Rick takes Morty to a world wherein that reality the duo both die. And so, the two bury their dead selves, and everything is just as it was, sans apocalypse.

27. Get Schwifty (Season 2, Episode 5)

So… what do you do when a giant head shows up in the sky and demands a hit song, but all the big musicians are gone, as there was an earthquake at the Grammys? Only one musician left… Rick.

He makes up the mega bop “Get Schwifty”, and we all rejoice. The giant head approves and disappears. However, the head didn’t just want a hit and transports earth to a place with 24 other planets that were transported for a reality show competition, a talent show, and Rick brings in the big guns – Ice T.

ice-t2

Religion goes into a tailspin and turns to Headism, “praise be the head”, causing everyone to be nicer and better, especially Summer who becomes somewhat of the perfect daughter.

Ice T isn’t super helpful, as he actually IS literal Ice, and says he will just float around space as Ice if the world gets blown up. But when Rick doesn’t manage to create another hit and the world is shot with a destruction ray, Ice T -as real floating Ice - blocks the ray, and Rick goes into another Get Schwifty rendition. The world and us rejoice once more and are unable to get that damn song out of our heads.

28. & 29. Dr. Xenon Bloom & Anatomy Park (Season 1, Episode 3)

Why go the trouble of resurrecting dinosaurs when you can create a park just as captivating using one single human body? Pirates of the pancreas sounds wild.

Morty is shrunk by Rick into an old sick dude who inhabits the park and takes a train straight to the liver, where he Meets Dr. Bloom. He discovers this is a park that explores diseases, which are running rampant in the “park”.

Dr. Bloom takes Morty and the team to try and kill the diseases with machine guns. Trouble really heaps on when the guy who inhabits the park dies, and so the only way out is through the digestive tract (“it’s a small small tract” is pretty great).

But when they are betrayed by the big muscly machine gun guy, they make a run for the areola, while sadly Dr. Bloom is taken over by an E. coli outbreak. Morty is saved by Rick who explodes the dead guy over earth and brings him home. Maybe dinosaurs are less dangerous after all.

30. & 31. Ants in My Eyes Johnson & Rixty Minutes (Season 1, Episode 8)

What if you could watch TV from infinite dimensions and planets? And what if you yourself appeared on TV shows due to different timelines? Pretty cool. The “Ants in your eyes” guy is basically a stone-cold weirdo character who has actual ants in his eyes, trying to sell you electronics on an infomercial.

ants-in-my-eyes

He also gets burnt alive, but doesn’t feel it as he has a rare disease that makes him have no sense of feeling in his body… At the same time, Rick and Morty are watching the amazing TV, Jerry and Beth realize from Rick’s amazing virtual reality goggles that show you in different dimensions and alternate lives – that their lives look a whole lot more exciting without Summer, who leaves very upset at this revelation.

At the same time, Rick and Morty discover another planet’s version of Garfield: Gazorpazorp, who’s pretty damn mean. Morty finds a sad and angry Summer and tells her the truth about him and Rick coming from another reality, and their bodies being buried in the back yard.

This seems to soothe Summer, after a great existential speech by Morty explaining that nothing really matters – we are all here by accident, and he eats breakfast every morning just a stone’s throw away from his own grave.

By the end of the episode, Beth and Jerry reconcile, Summer and Morty are satisfied, and Rick – none the wiser (if that’s possible) – turns on some “Ball Fondlers.”

32. The ABC’s of Beth (Season 3, Episode 9)

Beth discovers that Rick created a world just for her (instead of babysitting her when she was young), which she named Froopyland. At the same time, Summer and Morty visit a recently divorced Jerry, who is dating a cool alien chick.

Back to Beth, she’s upset at her abandoning dad, but not much time for that – as Tommy, Beth’s best friend from childhood who she thought was killed by his dad – is the leader of Froopyland – the planet Rick created.

Summer and Morty go out to eat with Jerry and his alien lady, and they’re surprised and concerned at how fast things seem between their father and the blue warrior. It also turns out they’re right, and when Jerry breaks up with her, she tries to kill them.

Back to Froopyland, Beth and Rick meet king Tommy and watch his own personal theatre, showing how Beth brought him to this world, and he was abandoned in honey. We also get an eerie, icky look at how Tommy creates his children – by humping anything that moves, and doesn’t.

Rick takes Beth back home, and a difficult scene between them ensues. Things are rough between fathers and their daughters. She’s heartbroken at his accusations of her being a crazy/sociopathic kid, and she returns to Froopyland to save Tommy.

When she returns and confesses her identity, he tells her she was the one who pushed him into the honey that left him there. Beth doesn’t remember things that way and starts beating up Tommy’s weird and small children/snacks, enjoying every moment.

She gets a DNA sample and brings it back to earth, where she creates a Tommy clone so that his dad doesn’t get the death penalty, as he was accused of killing him. The entire experience really rattles Beth, she asks Rick what to do.

Surprisingly, he offers up an amazing solution. He can create a clone of her, and she can go away and try and find her bliss. The episode is done, and we have no idea if the Beth we see then is the “real” one, or the clone.

Even though this is not considered one of the strongest episodes, I find that the R&M episodes that are quiet, thoughtful and introspective have a huge impact, as a daughter of a pretty great, but complex man myself.

The dialogue is brilliant and touching, and the concept of finally putting the two characters together to hash things out was a brilliant one. If there is a clone, Beth, I wonder where she went off too….
