How To: Transition Your Summer Clothes for Fall

There are two types of people in this world: the summer lovers that will wear sandals until their toes turn blue, and those that are already reaching for their favorite knits. If you’re part of the former group, you definitely won’t be ready to let go of your summer clothes come September. The good news is that you don’t have to! With the right styling, you can make your beloved summer clothes feel seasonally appropriate even when the leaves start changing.

Bring Out Your Boots

Nothing says fall like boots, yet they still look great paired with typical summer items like dresses, rompers, skirts, and shorts. Swap out your sandals and sneakers for ankle boots or even over the knee boots and you can still wear your favorite summer pieces in the fall.

Start Wearing Light Layers

Instead of reaching for heavier items like sweaters, start your layering game slowly while still wearing summer pieces. Throw a leather/denim jacket or light cardigan over your favourite sundress. Wear a long sleeve tee underneath your dungarees and/or slip dress. Make your shorts look more polished with a blazer. If it’s cold enough, cover up those legs with some tights.

Switch Up Your Accessories

Accessories can change the entire tone of an outfit. Stow away summery straw/canvas bags and bring back smart leather options. Wrap a lightweight scarf around your neck. Hats are also an excellent and easy way to add fall vibes to your look. Simply add a baker boy cap or fedora and voila, seasonal appropriateness.

Change Your Color Palette

We all associate pastels and brights with the warmer months, but you’re bound to have neutral summer clothes too so stick to those towards the end of the season. Ease off your light wash denim and pull out the indigo, grey, and black. Maybe you even have summer clothes in fall colors - mustard has been pretty huge this year! You can also add pops of fall colors in the form of accessories, makeup, and nail polish.

Play With Texture

Even if you’re not a big fan of fall/winter clothes you have to admit they have some great textures: leather, velvet, faux fur. Your favorite dresses and rompers will look adorable underneath a teddy coat. And those breezy blouses you’ve been wearing with cutoffs? Your leather leggings are begging to be styled with them.

Don’t despair summer lovers! Your favorite clothes still have ample time to be worn.
