Lately fashion has been all about transparency, literally. The material of the season seems to be clear (or coloured) plastic. Visit any retailer - brick and mortar or online, high end or high street - and the one common thing you’ll see are clothing and accessories made of plastic. This quirky, futuristic trend is not for the shy as it shows everything off. Will you dare to try it?

Start with accessories

Plastic isn’t the most comfortable material, of course, so it’s perfectly understandable if you don’t actually want to wear a plastic piece. You can still embrace the trend with some great accessories! Cute plastic bags in structured shapes (square, round, bucker) are all the rage this season. If you don’t want to show the world what’s in your bag find one that comes with an inner pouch in a solid material (such as leather). Plus, you’ll never have to worry about your plastic bag getting damaged if you get caught in the rain!

Aside from bags, you can also try plastic hats. Bucket hats and/or visors are probably the best place to start.

Invest in a plastic raincoat

Trendy and practical! A raincoat is an item that will always come in handy, especially if you live in a place with a rainy season or overall climate. The best part of a transparent raincoat is that you’ll still be able to show off your cute outfit while keeping dry. Choose a parka-style fit for an edgy, street-style inspired look or a trench coat-style fit for a more feminine feel.

Get some plastic shoes

Footwear is also an easy way to add some plastic to your look. If you’re worried about breathability, you don’t have to go for all-over plastic (though jelly sandals are perfect for nostalgic 90s vibes). This season’s shoes have little touches of plastic that will keep your feet comfortable and on trend. Find some mixed media sandals with a plastic strap (or two) for a chic, modern take on the trend. Ankle boots with transparent heels are also a great option that you can carry into fall and winter. Of course, if you want to go all out there are really cool options of all over plastic boots available too!

Style it as usual

Now that you have your statement plastic piece, treat it as you would any other fabric. Street style icons have been injecting plastic with their regular outfits to keep it looking modern. Avoid styling it with metallics or overly avant-garde pieces or you might end up looking like a character from the Jetsons. For example, wear your plastic raincoat over your t-shirt and jeans or carry your plastic bag with your favourite dress and you’ll instantly get that effortless chic look.
