Year after year, there’s one item that always shines its way (literally) into the fashion spotlight come December: sequins. These tiny, sparkly discs are a holiday fashion staple, yet they’re also one of the most controversial textures. When wearing sequins there’s a fine line between school dance performance uniform and ultra chic party outfit. So, how can you stay on the right side of the line?
Sequins can be a big statement, so the key to wearing them right is all about finding balance. You don’t want to go overboard. Let them be the focal point of your outfit and keep the rest simple. Basically, treat them as you would a loud print or vibrant color. If you’re dipping your toes in the water, go for darker colored sequins as they’ll be more subtle. Matte sequins aren’t quite as shiny, making dark matte sequins make the perfect choice for a beginner.
● Keep your color palette neutral.
You can wear the brightest of sequins, but stick to blacks and whites for the rest of your outfit. This will help tone down the shine of the sequins.
● Choose an unexpected partner.
Everyone agrees that sequins are not casual. So pair them with something a bit more relaxed for that cool high-low feel. If you have a sequin skirt or pants, you can wear it with a simple t-shirt or blouse, or a cozy sweater. This gives you a lot of choice for footwear. You can add to the dressy feel with heels, or continue mixing and matching with flats or boots. Heeled ankle boots or over the knee boots will give a sleek feel, while chunky combat style boots give the look a bit of edge. If you have a sequin top, go for denim in a clean medium blue or black wash or tailored trousers. If you have a sequin dress with slim straps, why not layer a t-shirt underneath?
● Go easy on the hair and makeup.
You don’t need an elaborate hairdo or full face of makeup. Keep your hair down to avoid looking like a competitive figure skater or dancer. Your sequins will give you plenty of shine, so opt for a simple, dewy makeup lip. That being said, if you want a bit of color on your lips - go for it! You’re allowed to be a little extra at the end of the year.
Embrace the sparkle and have fun. Who knows, sequins might become your favorite texture!
