Finding the perfect lipstick color isn’t easy. There are hundreds of shades, each one just slightly different from the previous. It can be a very overwhelming process. Once you find out which colors work for you, your makeup bag and routine will become a lot easier.
The best place to start is with your skin tone.
Like with clothing and jewelry, certain skin tones look better with certain colors. This is probably the reason that certain lip colors don’t look good on you - they simply don’t complement your skin tone. You can probably say what range your skin tone lies from light to dark, but when it comes to makeup knowing your undertone is important.
To find out your undertone, look at the veins on your wrists. If they are blue, your skin has cool undertones, and it will appear more pink. If they are green, your skin has warm undertones that looks more yellow. If your veins aren’t very prominent you can also do a jewelry test. Silver looks better with cool undertones, and gold looks better with warm undertones. From there it’s much easier to pick lip colors - cool shades go with cool undertones, and warm shades go with warm undertones!
But don’t worry, we have some examples for more guidance. Fair skin tones tend to have cool undertones. Those with fair skin look amazing with bold reds and deep burgundies. They should avoid pale pinks or anything orange-y, as they may appear washed out. Olive skin tones, which tend to have warm undertones, tend to have more options when it comes to lip colors. Most pinks, reds, nudes, browns, and oranges will work for you. Deep colors work beautifully for dark skin tones: plums, browns, berries, and dark reds. Avoid pale or light shades as they will clash with dark skin. For further inspiration, you can look up celebrities with similar skin tones to yours and see what their favorite lip colors are.
Finding the right lip color is the perfect finishing touch to your makeup look. It’ll give you a confidence boost like no other type of makeup can. Good luck finding yours!
