New Year’s Resolutions in January are like sweets in December - you just can’t avoid them. Even if you say you’re not a resolutions person, you can’t help but admit that with the new year comes that inevitable desire for change. And while it’s true the ever popular ‘go to the gym more’ resolution always tends to fall flat after a few weeks, there are so many other doable New Year’s resolutions you can start and achieve this month.
DRINK MORE WATER
This is probably the easiest way to make your body happy this year. Gotta stay hydrated! An easy way to keep track of your water intake is by simply buying a water bottle and bringing it with you everywhere. Keep it by your bed at home, your desk at work, in your bag when you’re on the go, and sip throughout the day. If you’re having to refill a few times a day, then you’re on the right track!
BE MORE MINDFUL OF YOUR SPENDING
Budgeting sucks, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. If numbers aren’t your strong suit, opt for a budgeting app to do the work for you. Let 2019 finally be the year that you start doing those little things that help - bringing lunch instead of buying, skipping out on daily lattes, etc. Plus the beginning of the year is the perfect opportunity to review your accounts. Never got around to learning Photoshop? Cancel your subscription! Ex still using your Netflix account? Demand they pay their share!
CURATE YOUR CLOSET
No, you don’t have to be one of those 10-piece capsule wardrobe people but let’s face it - you probably have a bag of stuff you’ve been meaning to donate for months lying at the bottom of your closet right now. And if you don’t, you can definitely make a bag. When you’re shopping this year consider the ‘if you bring in something new, get rid of something old’ philosophy. It’s cliche but it really is accurate.
FIND A WORKOUT THAT WORKS FOR YOU
As we already mentioned, going to the gym is one of the most popular resolutions year after year but most people give up after a few weeks. Chances are if the gym bored you last year, it’ll bore you this year. That doesn’t mean you’ll never reach your fitness goals though! The gym is just one of so many forms of exercise. Take up your favorite childhood sport again (find an adults-only team) or try something different like rock climbing or hot yoga.
Maybe you can’t quite afford your dream backpacking trip through Asia but you can always find a way to switch up your surroundings. Travelling doesn’t always have to include 15 hour flights and it doesn’t have to last for weeks at a time. Use your weekends/days off to explore neighboring towns and areas. Day trips count too!
The most important part of achieving your resolutions is to take baby steps and be easy on yourself. No one expects you to become a completely different person come February, and neither should you. Breathe, enjoy, and take pride in yourself!
