There are certain destinations that are synonymous with sun and sand: Bali, Thailand, the Mediterranean Coast, any Caribbean country. And while all of these places certainly deserve their spot on the tropical beach destination list, they also tend to be the most crowded due to their popularity. If you’re a beach lover that wants to try somewhere new and different, or at least less common, check out one of these underrated beach destinations. They probably won’t be places you think of when it comes to beaches but you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Cornwall, Scotland & Wales, UK
Rain and gloomy weather is probably what first comes to mind when you think of the UK, which is fair. It’s an island that gets its fair share of bad weather, but if you travel there in the summer you’ll get an ample amount of sunshine and you’ll even get to witness white sand beaches. Yes, you read that correctly. Head north to Scotland and you can enjoy pristine white sand while also enjoying the company of sheep and ponies (check out Iona, Isle of Harris, and Isle of Mull to name a few). In Wales you can enjoy golden sand and a magnificent coastline with rolling hills. Meanwhile in the southernmost part of England, Cornwall, you can swim or surf in clear blue water or sunbathe on white sand. Check out St Ives, Penzance, and the near tropical Isles of Scilly.
Often overlooked by its southern neighbor Greece or Italy to the west, Albania is actually a stunning Mediterranean gem. It boasts stunningly clear, blue water, soft white sand, and a lot less tourists than its neighboring coastal countries. Visit before the secret gets out!
Many people overlook the Kenyan coast, preferring to travel inland to go on safari or visit the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro. And while those are all amazing sights to see, you shouldn’t miss out on the stunning tropical beaches. They’re complete with white sand, palm trees, and crystal clear water from the Indian Sea.
Again, most people travelling to Israel don’t cite the beach as their primary reason. This middle-eastern country has a lot of historical and cultural interest, but don’t stay landlocked in Jerusalem. Head west to Tel Aviv, which is known as a party city during the summer months, and enjoy the long stretch of white sand beach and ultra warm water.
California gets all the credit for west coast beaches in the USA, but don’t ignore its northern neighbor Oregon! Ok, so the water may be a bit chilly but the Oregon coast still has long stretches of beautiful, soft golden sand. And while the palm trees may only start further south, you get to enjoy stunning Pacific North Western beauty: jagged coastlines and breathtaking rock formations. Be sure to visit Cannon Beach, home of the famous Haystack Rock.
This southern state is good for more than just rodeos, barbecues, and country music. The southeast part of Texas sits on the Gulf of Mexico, which means the beaches are on par with Mexico and nearby Caribbean islands. You’ll find white sand, bright blue water, and palm trees.
East Coast USA (Massachusetts to South Carolina)
We all know that Miami is a top beach destination, but you can travel all the way up the East Coast of the USA to access great beaches. Yes, even as far north as Massachusetts! Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts all have white or golden sand beaches and beautiful views of the Atlantic.
